Learn to Ski From the Best

Lost Valleys PSIA Certified Ski School is one of the largest in New England and recognized as one of the finest. All instructors undergo a comprehensive training program each year, keeping up with the latest techniques of the American method. Ideal teaching terrain and day or night classes will have your beginner skiing in no time, or your expert fine tuning his or her skills . Through area schools and organizations, Lost Valley also offers a comprehensive racing program.

What Kind of Skier Are You?

 The Lost Valley Skier Development System encompasses nine levels of skill development divided into three stages of skiing. One can master the sport of skiing by blending the new skills at each level to provide an enjoyable skiing experience. For simplicity, each stage corresponds to the slope rating the skier should be skiing at Lost Valley. Please refer to the Lost Valley trail map so the level of difficulty matches with the stage of skiing.


Stage 1
Introduction to Skiing

Levels 1-3
Learn the basics of skiing. We'll show you how to maneuver your skis in our beginner teaching areas, ride the chairlift, change directions on skis, link turns, control speed, and stop. At the end of this stage, you will have developed confidence as you ski on all beginner terrain. You will be skiing all green runs by level 3.



LEVEL 1
: (Gliding Wedge)
I have never skied before.
I can stand, walk , climb and glide.
I can do a gliding wedge, slow down and stop. I can do slight turns, I am familiar with the chair lift.



LEVEL 2
: (Wedge Turns)
I can make controlled linked wedge turns to the bottom.
I can control linked wedge turns and make spontaneous wide and narrow turns.
I can make spontaneous turns and come to a complete stop by turning in either direction.



LEVEL 3:
(Wedge Christie)
I have begun working on reducing the size of my wedge turns.
I can start all my turns in a wedge and bring my skis to a match at the end of each turn


Stage 2
Intermediate Skiing

Levels 4 - 6
In this stage you will begin skiing with improved confidence and control. You will learn the fundamentals that will help you master parallel skiing. Through making turns, you will devlop tactics for handling all intermediate terrain that will make your skiing efficient and effortless. At this stage you will be skiing all blue runs.



LEVEL 4:
(Advanced Wedge Christie)
I have begun working on Advanced Wedge Christie (bringing my skis together early in the turn.) I can wedge my skis slightly at the beginning of each turn but bring them together very early in my turn. I can ski moderately and I am beginning to use my inside pole as a timing and steadying device.



LEVEL 5:
(Open Parallel)
I have begun to work on keeping my skis parallel without a wedge.
I can change the edges of my skis at the same time without a wedge.
I can use a pole touch to time and steady my turns.



LEVEL 6:
(Dynamic Parallel)
I can use my whole body towards the new turn to change directions. I can swing and touch my pole to the snow to start each turn. I am linking parallel turns continuously.


Stage 3
Advanced/Expert Skiing

Levels 7-9
In this stage you are a parallel skier and have achieved advanced/expert skiing. This level encompasses more of a coaching format to refine and sharpen skills on varied terrain and snow conditions. You will be skiing black diamond runs at this stage.



LEVEL 7
: (Short Radius Turn)
* Consult with Ski School
* Must have Directors Approval
I have begun to work on short radius turns. I can do short radius turns and my lower body and torso faces downhill continuously.
I ski very difficult terrain.



LEVEL 8
: (Carved Turns)
* Consult with Ski School
* MUST have Directors Approval
I can roll into an early edge and hold the edge throughout the entire turn, leaving a narrow track in the snow. I can also ski to control my speed.
I can ski all terrain, moguls, steeps, and race competitively on a course.



SNOWBOARDING

BEGINNER
I have never been on a snowboard before. I can manage a snowboard on flat terrain, straight gliding and stopping. I know what side slipping is. I know what the edges are used for.

ADVANCED
I can turn in both directions and use the chair lift. I can control my speed by linked, skidded turns and working on form and balance. I can link turns of various shapes with speed, control and rhythm. I can adapt to different terrain and snow directions.Waiver of Liability for Ski/Boarding
I realize that skiing/riding is a dangerous sport and that undertaking such a sport, even under supervision of a coach is an assumption of risk. I realize that properly maintained equipment is essential to participation in the sport and here state that I will provide it through a certified, indemnified source. As a condition of enrollment of the student, the undersigned agrees to accept such liability.
